This second collaboration was done between Yohanseh: Improve Your Writing. I provided two pictures of Body Art and Yohanseh took the liberty of teaching me how to do a proper write up on both of them.

One proper way to
describe art is to refer mainly to visual elements such as form, composition,
techniques, medium and subject matter. However another approach may be adopted
so that the average person can get a better understanding and feel for the art.
Using the above
examples, a description will include the mood and visual characteristics of the
art. Mood is more or less a subjective emotional state and visual characteristic
includes shapes, colours, textures, lines, values, space and movement.
Next is to describe the
art as if the person listening was blind. That means you have to create a way
to make them literally feel the art.
Then you try to put
yourself in the shoes of the average person by creating an emotional connection
with the art and the average person.
Art is said to be active
and not passive so the use of action words are required to describe art. Plus
persons purchasing art are also not likely to be passive.
Lastly, speak about the
colours but use words that describe the colours and their effect. E.g. red is
the colour of blood and rose but it can mean anger or desire and it is a
passionate colour.
So in the blog ‘what is
your canvas’ you can take these simple pointers and try in your own unique way
to describe some of the artwork posted Remember your artistic quality may not
be the same with another individual but at least you may now see art in a new
light by applying these tips.
